What's the Deal with All the Hate?

A popular thing on the internet is to hate.  If there is something to love out there, ten times stronger is the hate towards something.  A classic example: the star wars prequels and the special editions of the original three star wars movies.  People hate Jar Jar Binks, hate that whiny Anakin Skywalker, hate that Han did not shoot first in the special edition of the 1977 classic, but mostly they hate George Lucas, saying he “ruined” the franchise.  The hate is such a well known part of the mythos surrounding the six Star Wars movies that it has become a given fact that anyone on TV will gush about the about the original three but put down the three prequels.
Maybe it is easier to find something to criticize than to find something to like.  The Nostalgia Critic, A.K.A The Guy with Glasses, in between reviewing movies that actually have some redeeming value, will pick the most unbelievably awful movies to criticize just so he can point out how awful they really are.  He says it in the most sarcastic way that is admittedly funny, but he still harp on the movie like it was the most awful thing to review in the whole world.  It’s almost as if he picked it just to say how much he hated it.  The most recent example is the low-grade sequel, A Christmas Story 2.  Obviously made just to tie in to the hype around the original, most of the time sequels like that one are ignored for good reason.  But instead The Nostalgia Critic sarcastically harps on it for over twenty minutes in a review video.  He also made similar videos for the Lorax and the Princess Diaries 2.  He also did a whole series made four Matrix videos for the Matrix movie series, and only really liked certain shorts in the Animatrix spin off series.
Another place that is a free-for-all of hate are the comments anywhere where the public is given free reign.  People will criticize every single little thing, to the point that some celebrities will ban comments all together.   PewDiePie, the most subscribed YouTuber, did a video telling his fans why he disabled comments for his YouTube videos.  The comments are swirling in YouTube with hatred for something about the video or the people in the videos, many with offensive language.  It is not a nice place, and I do not recommend checking out most comments with most YouTube channels, with the possible exception of PBS Idea Channel.
So is it wrong to hate something and focus on the things you don’t like?  Well, it technically is not focusing on positive things but negative things about a work.  It is saying, “look at this, it stinks!  We hate it!  The writing, the acting, the directing, all stupid/idiotic/boring, etc, etc, etc.”  And while that is all well and good, and I do think fair reviews should focus on both the good and the bad of a work, to go out your way to hate brings so much more negativity into the room.  Many comments, that actually like the work, which are responses to the first hateful comments, are filled with hate themselves.  The first hateful comment breeds more hateful comments directed back at the commenter.  While it is not easy, it would be far better to not respond to hate with hate, but to ignore the hate and write a positive comment.  To focus on the good works out there, to find the good things to recommend.  We need to build each other up in life, and maybe that even includes the movies reviewed and comments on YouTube videos.  Then we may become better and more positive people because of that decision, and we will feel better about the people around us as well.

Romance is for Other People Tidbit #23 (Amanda Character Profile)

Hello Everyone! Here are the revised Romance is for Other People Tidbits!

Amanda Character Profile:
Amanda is 16 years old.  She tries to maintain a B- average.  She has no siblings.  She lives with her mother and has no contact with her father.  She is as clever and sarcastic as she is angry and bitter.  She has played basketball since she was very young.  She only has one friend, her best friend Katie, also on the basketball team.  She sometimes gets in fights with Katie, because of what Amanda perceives is Katie being a “mom” (that is, telling her how she’s messing up).  Her middle school basketball team won one game in the playoffs for the first time in the school’s history.  However, currently she has been skipping practice after getting into fights with the coach.  She considers all guys to be jerks, even the boy she’s currently flirting with, Jeremy.  She knows he flirts with other girls but she can’t stay away.  A typical day would be running into Jeremy and flirting with him, arguing with the teacher about homework assignments, having lunch with Katie, running into Jeremy and flirting/fighting with him again, and finding an excuse to skip practice.

Romance is for Other People Tidbit #22 (Jeremy Character Profile)

Hello Everyone! Here are the revised Romance is for Other People Tidbits!

Jeremy Character Profile:
Jeremy Wagner is 16 years old.  He tries to maintain a C+ average.  He has no siblings.  His parents are divorced and he rarely sees his father.  His mother spoils him and she has a rotating series of boyfriends.  Jeremy is loud and speaks his mind.  He hates his cousin Chris and thinks he’s a loser.  He played basketball since he was a little kid.  He considers all of his basketball teammates his buddies.  He wants to be accepted by the coach.  His middle school team made it to the playoffs for the first time in school history.  As a result, he is arrogant about his high school skills and a ball hog.  He has tendencies to have fantasies, sometimes even in the middle of conversations.  He loves to flirt with girls and pretend to be interested in them.  One girl he flirts with, Amanda, he thinks he might actually like.  A typical day for Jeremy would be running into Amanda and flirting with her, flirting with Becca in Chemistry, goofing off of classes, running into Amanda again and flirting/fighting with her, flirting with Kristina in social studies, and running into Amanda yet again and fighting/flirting with her, and maybe showing off his oh so obvious prowess at basketball practice.

Hello Everyone!  I am so sorry, but I have been very busy this week.  There will be a tidbit today, but no more for the rest of the week.  I will try to return to the normal schedule on Monday next week. Here are the revised Romance is for Other People Tidbits!

Here is the twenty-first tidbit:

21. Lydia Jamison Character Profile:
Lydia Jamison is 14 years old.  She maintains an A- average.  She has a little brother named Mark, with whom she has an “okay” relationship.  She is loyal to her best friend Chris. She is more willing to speak up than Chris, though she shares some of the same quiet and reserved traits.  She has a good relationship with her parents, but she is closer to her father.  She has acted in plays since she was a little girl, and three of the plays in middle school with Chris.  She used to be as close to some girls she knew when she did plays, but now she is only close friends with Chris.  Like Chris, she can be compassionate towards others.  Likes romantic movies but internalizes the relationships she sees.  She is more comfortable with physical affection. A huge secret she has never told Chris: she has been in love with him since she was very little.  She has however become somewhat jaded because Chris has never returned her affections or shown any hint he was in love her…  A typical day for her would be getting up, going to school with Chris, and then going home to do homework with him, which she preferred to do at Chris’ house.

Romance is for Other People Tidbit #20 (Chris Character Profile)

Hello Everyone!  Here are the revised Romance is for Other People Tidbits!

Here is the twentieth tidbit:

20.  Chris Character Profile:
Chris Howard is 14 years old.  He maintains a B+ average.  He has no siblings.  He is quiet and reserved.  He is loyal to his best friend Lydia.  He has a good relationship with his parents.  He would, however, avoid his cousin Jeremy at all costs; and struggles to stand up to him.  He played basketball until age 11.  He turned his attention to plays and acted in Music Man, Robin Hood and Romeo and Juliet with Lydia after age 11.  He does not have any close friends outside of Lydia but doesn’t care.  He likes things the way they are and does not want to upset the status quo.  He is compassionate towards others, though sometimes doesn’t know how to respond.  He is not a fan of romantic movies but will watch them because he knows it’s what Lydia likes.  He is partly or acutely uncomfortable with physical affection.  Negative generalizations about guys annoy him.  And finally, he is afraid that his best friend Lydia wants more than just a friendship.  A typical day for Chris would be going to school, eating lunch with Lydia, going home and doing homework in his kitchen, also with Lydia.

In Praise of Penny from The Big Bang Theory

[Spoiler Alert!  At the end, there are some plot lines revealed for first three seasons].
In 2006, The Big Bang Theory premiered on CBS.  At the time, it seemed like an interesting concept for a series: a group of four nerd friends who are brilliant at their jobs and their passions (TV shows, movies, comics, and video games considered “geeky”) but incompetent in other equally important areas like social interaction and finding a romantic relationship.  Sheldon, who desires order and typically has no regard for social rules, would stick his nose up at romantic relationships, considering them a waste of time.  Howard went in the opposite direction and is constantly coming on to the ladies, with no regard for their feelings; thus, he typically strikes out.  Raj, however, has such a crippling fear of being around women that he can’t even speak around them except with alcohol.  Leonard, the most socially aware of the bunch, still struggles in social situation to keep from embarrassing himself.
Into this world comes Penny, the girl who lives across the hall from Leonard and Sheldon.  She is a waitress trying to make ends meet while looking for any acting job.  A gorgeous blonde, this woman may not be as intelligent in smarts as the four main characters, nevertheless is well aware of social situations and social cues, and can navigate more successfully in the outside world.  Case in point: in the season three episode, “The Cornhusker Vortex,” Penny is shown to have many friends who watch football with her and enjoy the game with her.  However, she is not without her own flaws: she is a serial dater, constantly giving into shallow but handsome men who will give her attention (this does not go unnoticed by Leonard, who is in love with Penny).  Also, while Leonard and Sheldon’s apartment is immaculately clean, her apartment is constantly messy with clothes thrown everywhere.
When Penny first moves to the apartment across the hall in the pilot, she asks as a favor for Leonard and Sheldon to get her TV from her boyfriends’ place, realizing of course the awkwardness of having to collect your things from your ex.  Leonard, infatuated with Penny, convinces Sheldon to go along with the foolhardy errands’ run, but their reasoning falls on deaf ears to the incredibly buff ex-boyfriend of Penny’s, and they return without the TV…and without pants.  Someone with no social grace would have just been angry at Leonard and Sheldon for failing to return with the TV.  But Penny, feeling bad about the situation, once again realizes that she should show her appreciation to the two guys for what they did, and offers to give them dinner.
This is what begins her friendship with the four friends.  She becomes at times “one of the guys,” coming over for takeout on many occasions and willing to engage in some of the same hobbies and interests, like Halo.  But eventually, Leonard makes Penny aware of his feelings toward her.  While admittedly not attracted to his physical attributes or his intelligence, Penny is however attracted to his sweet and caring nature toward him versus the guys who usually date her.  They go on a date at end of the first season, but quickly break up in the beginning of the second because Penny is fearful that she is “not smart enough” for him.  However, again, it is Leonard’s constant caring nature and good heart that enable Penny to fall for him when the four go on a scientific mission to the arctic at the end of season three.  She didn’t even know how much she missed and loved him until he told her he was leaving.  Leonard and Penny begin a real long term relationship in season four.

What makes Penny so great is that she is the opposite in some ways the four guys, but she is not dumb.  She is socially intelligent in other ways and that shows, and she is not afraid to also let off a sarcastic (but typically not insulting) comment when she recognizes one of the guys’ social awkwardness.  She is shown as a flawed but interesting individual, who has a good heart but is capable of making bad judgments with the men in her life.  Just like Leonard, Sheldon, Howard and Raj, she is a three-dimensional character, and the show is better because of her in it.
