5 Actors in Christian Productions

There used to be a feeling that Christian Productions are low-budget filled with unknown actors.  Not so anymore.  Around the time of “The Passion of the Christ” in 2004, which made over $600 in the worldwide box office, Hollywood has been more open to Christian productions, and major stars have appeared in Christian movies.

Katherine Heigl starred in two movies based on the Love Comes Softly series.  Best known for playing Izzie Stevens on Gray’s Anatomy, in she starred in Love Comes Softly (2003), about a woman in the 1800s who marries for security versus love, to a man with a young girl because her husband died and she is alone and pregnant.  Katherine’s character struggles in her role as a new wife and stepmother, keeping her distance from her new husband, but eventually she realizes that she is in love with him and wants to help raise their daughter.

Kevin Sorbo portrayed Professior Jeffrey Radisson in God’s Not Dead (2014).  Best known for playing Hercules in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, he stars as an atheistic professor of philosophy.  At first, he is so convinced that God is not relevant to his class that he makes all of the students in his class sign a paper stating that “God is Dead.”  A Christian student refuses to sign the paper and as a result of the debate, the student is allowed to present arguments for the Christian faith.  Radisson is at first unconvinced, but as time goes on, certain things start convict him.

Nicolas Cage is a well known action and drama movie star, starring in such movies as Moonstruck (1987), Con Air (1997), and National Treasure (2004). In 2014, Left Behind was remade with Nicolas Cage in the leading role.  Nicolas Cage portrays airline pilot Rayford Steele, an unbeliever who is married to a Christian woman, Irene.  He also has a college-aged daughter, Chloe, who returns home for her birthday.  While Chloe is home at the mall with his brother and Rayford is piloting a commercial airplane, millions of people across the world vanish, some thinking it is the believers caught up in the rapture.

Greg Kinnear is an actor known for his performances in movies such as Little Miss Sunshine (2006) and the Last Song (2010).  In 2014, he starred in Heaven is for Real, and plays the father of a boy who experienced visions of heaven while in a coma.  At first, while a Christian himself, he has trouble believing his son experienced the things he told his family.  Eventually, he decides to accept on faith that his son actually did see heaven and Jesus.

Chuck Norris, action star best known for his TV series “Walker, Texas Ranger,” appeared in the 2003 film Belles of Innocence.  In this story, three men board a small plane to hand out Bibles in Mexico.  Unfortunately, their plane crashes in the desolate town of Ceres, and with the help of a local rancher, played by Chuck Norris, they battle spiritual warfare in the area, against the town elder, who is an agent of Satan.

These major stars all decided to support Christian productions by acting in them.  Some of them, like Chuck Norris and Kevin Sorbo, are Christians themselves.  Here are several Christian movies of note to check out.
